Sometimes the best way forward is to step away.

• A few months abroad.

• A volunteering project that means something.

• A move to a country you've only visited once.

But wanting to go and knowing how to go are two different things. Most people lose months in open browser tabs, conflicting advice and questions they don't know who to ask.

I arrived in Australia on a working holiday visa with no plan and no English. Since then, I’ve lived on three continents, emigrated to Canada on my own and become a citizen, spent three months travelling through South America, and visited over 35 countries solo. I’ve also taken part in multiple international volunteering trips and led two of them, in Guatemala and Peru—with another coming up in the Philippines next March.

I speak three languages now. I learned one of them by getting on the plane anyway.
